Zoraya ter Beek, a physically healthy Dutch woman, has made the decision to legally end her life in May due to her ongoing struggles with mental health. Despite being in a loving relationship and having two cats, she is facing severe depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. Her doctors have informed her that there are no further treatment options available. It’s a heartbreaking situation for her and those around her.
Zoraya, who is 28 years old, has expressed that if her mental health doesn’t improve, she feels like she can’t continue living. The Free Press reported that more people are making the decision to end their lives due to a combination of mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety, along with other factors like economic uncertainty, climate change, and social media. Stef Groenewoud, a health care ethicist, mentioned that euthanasia is now being seen as a more acceptable option, whereas before it was considered a last resort.
