Being born in Ghana doesn’t guarantee you citizenship of Ghana -Her Ladyship Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo

Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo has been nominated for the Chief Justice position being handed over.from the Supreme Court as judge she was nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo as Chief Justice in waiting.

The recent announcement of the nomination of Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice in Ghana has been a cause for both celebration and reflection. As the third woman to be nominated for this esteemed position, this nomination has cemented the idea that the Women in Law and Leadership movement is here to stay and thrive!

On 26 may in her interview for the aspiring position whereby she was asked what makes one a citizen of Ghana, and why a birth certificate is as if not a proof of one’s nationality and she

Stated”honorable member citizenship is the matter of law, nationality is a matter of law certain jurisdiction being born in that country makes you a citizen of that country, in our country being born in Ghana doesn’t make you a citizen of Ghana it’s your relationship with your mother, it’s your mother’s identity it’s your father’s identity it’s your lineage that determines your citizenship so, that form records that form is actually international requirement we must know where everybody was born, and beyond that your nationality is derived from the information on that form, it is not the evident of your nationality, it is a beginning of appreciating how your nationality must be determined, it is an originating process” she said .
