No fewer than ten buildings including shops were razed to the ground as a petrol tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded at Olambe-Matogun area of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident, Sunday Sun gathered, occurred on Saturday around 7a.m. The driver of the tanker laden with about 45,000 litres of PMS was said to have lost control of the wheel on a stretch of the failed portion of the road forcing his truck to fall.

The impact, witnesses said, ruptured the containers and spilled its content on the road before it exploded with huge flame.

The truck driver was also said to be carrying the product to a filling station in the area when the accident occurred. The explosion and ensuing fire outbreak razed shops and buildings in the area, sending residents fleeing from their homes to escape the inferno.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Zonal Coordinator, South West, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said no life was lost or injured in the explosion.

“Though, no life was lost or any injuries sustained, about ten buildings were consumed in the incident.

“The situation was mitigated with most of the content spilling into the canal close to the scene.

  •  “This saved the community from a serious incident that could have affected more people,” Farinloye said.
