The First Lady made a statement about Nigerians leaving the country for menial jobs while leaving their dependents behind. She made this comment during a courtesy visit by the three Lagos senators at the State House in Abuja. The video of their discussion was posted by Arise TV.
According to reports, Senator Tinubu spoke about the importance of Nigerians supporting each other at home, as the government cannot solve all the problems. She emphasized that the wealthy individuals can play a role in helping the less fortunate for the betterment of all. The increasing number of Nigerians leaving the country in search of better opportunities in developed countries has been attributed to factors such as insecurity, unemployment, and high living costs.
According to the Migration Information Data Analysis System (MIDAS), around 2,115,139 people emigrated from Nigeria in 2022, and from January to September 31, 2023, approximately 1,574,357 individuals left the country. This adds up to a total of 3,679,496 people who have left Nigeria in the past two years. Senator Tinubu expressed her thoughts on the situation, highlighting that some people leave Nigeria for other countries but end up doing jobs there that they refused to do at home. She mentioned that despite their education, they might end up driving cabs instead.
