Donald Trump Reacts to Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Nancy, Calls It a ‘Terrible Thing’

President Donald Trump said he plans to call Savannah Guthrie amid the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie. He also offered federal assistance to Arizona law enforcement in their search.

“I think it’s terrible,” Trump, 79, told reporters at the Oval Office on Tuesday, Feb. 3, when asked about the situation.

“I’m going to call her later on,” the president continued. “It’s a terrible thing. I always get along well with Savannah. Very unusual situation, but we’re going to find out…”

The White House also shared information about Nancy’s disappearance on Instagram.

“The search for Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is ongoing, and authorities are requesting assistance from the public,” the administration wrote. “Anyone with information is urged to contact 911. Our prayers are with the Guthrie family as we hope for Nancy’s safe return home. 🙏.”

Nancy, 84, was last seen at her Arizona home on Saturday, Jan. 31, at around 9:30 p.m. local time, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) previously said. An urgent search for her began the following day after she was reported missing at 11 a.m.

“They’re just devastated like anyone would be. They are a family and they lean on each other,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said of the Guthrie family in an interview with PEOPLE on Monday, Feb. 2. Nanos said officials are “just staying in touch with them and they know this community supports them as well.”

During a press conference earlier that same day, Namos said officials consider Nancy’s home a “crime scene,” and he asked that anyone who knows anything about her disappearance contact them or call 911.

“We don’t need another bad, tragic ending. We need some help,” Nanos said.

“This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, is in need of medication — medication that, if she doesn’t have in 24 hours, it could be fatal,” he continued, later adding that Nancy “did not leave on her own.”

On Tuesday, Nanos said investigators still did not know Nancy’s whereabouts and are not sure how many people are involved in her kidnapping.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” Guthrie, 54, said in a statement read on the Today show Monday. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”

“We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900,” she said.
