Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua takes 12-year-old Naa Okromo as wife.

A traditional marriage happening in Nungua. Involves The Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, is marrying a young girl named Naa Okromo. Despite the significant age difference, it is customary in their community for Naa Okromo to take on the traditional name Naa Ayemoede.

After the initial marriage ceremony, Naa Ayemoede will undergo a second customary ceremony for purification. This ceremony is important as it empowers her to fulfill her duties as the wife of the Gborbu Wulomo, including the crucial role of procreation. Additionally, according to tradition, the Gborbu Wulomo will also take a ‘bue ekpaa yoo’ or customary wife, known as ‘sɛiheyoo’. This rite only occurs once in the lifetime of the Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse.

The Mantse mentioned that the case of the 12-year-old was exceptional, so it’s important to perform the necessary rites promptly to honor the tradition. However, the Mantse also emphasized the need for critical assessment of customary practices and reviewing any aspects that may have become outdated.
