Just as a fully functional being can be rendered incapacitated in a matter of seconds by the bite of a mosquito, incumbent National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, suffered a similar fate following the excruciating sting, albeit from that of a “human mosquito” – Johnson Asiedu Nketiah – during the party’s 10th National Delegates Congress.

The former longest-serving NDC General Secretary dethroned the incumbent in a landslide victory in a campaign slightly tinged with acrimony.

It was deemed as the clash of the titans, and the over 5 hours voting duration really did live up to expectations at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium!

However, at the end of grueling contest which saw over 9,000 delegates exercise their franchise to elect fresh leaders to steer the affairs of the opposition party going into the 2024 general election, Mr Asiedu Nketiah polled 5569 votes representing 65.17% of total votes cast to defeat his closest challenger, Ofosu Ampofo, who – went into the contest with the slogan C4C (Chairman 4 Chairman) – garnered 2392 ballots representing 33.81%.

These two were clearly the frontrunners since the other candidates for the Chairmanship slot: former Member of Parliament, Nii Armah Ashiety polled a paltry 38 votes which is 0.44% votes cast, while Mr Samuel Yaw Adusei had 62., representing 0.61%.

Meanwhile, in another stiff contest, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey beat off competition from two vastly experienced candidates to be elected the NDCs new General Secretary.

Fifi Kwetey, a former Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning and one time propaganda secretary of the NDC polled 4543 votes with Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, former Minister of Youth and Sports, garnering 1,408 ballots, while Dr Peter Boamah Otukonor, a former deputy General Secretary of the NDC had 2595 ballots.
