Though it is not the first award and/or welfare scheme by a member of parliament for his or her constituents, an MP established a welfare and award scheme for his constituents. Motivating the teacher is one sure way to get results. Even though the government and/or the employer, the Ghana Education Service, has an award scheme for teachers, the process of selecting the right winners is always called into question. Also, the awards by the state institutions are considered inadequate, especially at the lower levels. It is for this reason, hard-working Members of Parliament are taking the initiative to establish a scheme that awards and motivates teachers in their constituencies.

The member of parliament for Yendi constituency, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, has established a welfare scheme for his constituents with a seed capital of twenty thousand Ghana cedis (Ghc20,000). The welfare scheme was disclosed by the MP in an interview with Joynews on it’s news extra program.

Apart from the welfare scheme, the MP disclosed that he had instituted an awards scheme for teachers in his constituency to award deserving teachers at all levels. Teachers at the KG, Primary, Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools have the chance to win an award in their category. This method is different from the national awards where teachers at every level of the education sector are lumped up for the same awards.
