Kenneth Kuranchie requested the Supreme Court to revise his claims in a lawsuit. He believes that former President Mahama’s attempt to run in the 2024 Presidential elections is unconstitutional based on Article 66(1) of the Constitution. His previous suit was dismissed due to technical errors.

During the court hearing on Wednesday, May 8, Kenneth Kuranchie, the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight Newspaper, requested permission to expand and enhance two of his claims in the lawsuit. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, are also involved in the suit. The respondents, including Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, Tony Lithur (counsel for former President John Mahama), and Thaddeus Sory (lawyer for the Speaker of Parliament), did not oppose his request for amendment.

The 7-member panel of Justices, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, instructed Mr. Kuranchie to amend his documents by May 10, 2024. Ken Kuranchie is seeking two main reliefs: 1) A declaration that a person seeking a second presidential term must be a sitting president, according to Article 66 (1) and (2) of the 1992 Constitution. 2) A declaration that a former President of Ghana is not eligible to run for President, as per Article 62 of the 1992 Constitution.
Mr. Kuranchie is also requesting the Supreme Court to prevent Mr. Mahama from running for President. Additionally, he is urging the court to instruct the NDC Flagbearer to fully disclose his engagement term to Parliament.
